সোমত্ত মেয়ে
সোমত্ত গৃহশিক্ষিকা এক বালিকারে পড়ায়,
পড়াতে গিয়ে একদা যবে রাত ঘনিয়ে যায়;
জিজ্ঞাসে গৃহকর্ত্রীরে, ‘আছে কি কেউ বাসায়,
যে পারে এগিয়ে দিতে গলিপথটা একটু আমায়?’
কেননা, ওখানে বখাটে ক’টা মেলে আড্ডায়,
তাই পথটা পেরোতে কিছুটা সে ভয় পায়।
ফিক্ করে হেসে ফেললেন কর্ত্রী তা শুনে,
ভেবে পায় না সে, হাসলেন তিনি কী কারণে!
‘আমি তো ভেবেছি - ওরাই তোমারে ডরায়,
দেখেছো, কী রঙ তোমার শরীরে ঝলকায়?’
কালো বলে গঞ্জনা শুনে বেরোয় সে ত্রস্ত বেগে,
কেঁদে কেঁদে পথে ফিরে বাড়ী কষ্টে-আবেগে।
একদা মা তার জিজ্ঞাসে মেয়ের বাবারে,
কালো যে ছেলেটা আসবে দেখতে তারে,
কীকরে এ ছেলের সাথে বিয়ে দেয়া যায়?
রেগে গিয়ে বললেন তিনি, ‘হ্যাঁ দেয়া যায় -
আতুড়, ল্যাংড়া, কুৎসিত কিংবা সে অথর্ব,
রাজী হলেই গড়বো যে আমি সে সম্পর্ক।
কে করবে বিয়ে তোমার কালো এ মেয়েরে,
তুমি কি গিলেছিলে কয়লা পেটে তারে ধরে?’
এদিকে মেয়ে পারছে না করতে প্রতিবাদ,
ওদিকে কেঁদে কেঁদে মা যে গুনছে প্রমাদ:
‘ছেলে কি জুটবে না এ মেয়ের কপালে,
কী করবো তবে চেষ্টাসব গেলে বিফলে?’
সম্বন্ধ আসে আর সম্বন্ধ যায় শুধু ভেঙ্গে,
বাবার মেজাজ তাই চড়ে বসেছে তুঙ্গে।
রাগের মাথায় একদা বলে ফেলে মেয়েরে:
‘আজকাল তোর জন্য কি বিষ নাই বাজারে?’
রাগে-অপমানে মেয়ে করে বসে শক্ত এক পণ,
বিয়ে সে করবে না প্রতিষ্ঠিত না হবে যতক্ষণ।
কঠোর পরিশ্রমে হয় সে যবে সরকারী অফিসার,
বিয়ের সম্বন্ধ তখন আসতে থাকে তার বেশুমার।
যারা যারা গিয়েছিলো চলে একদা মুখ ফিরিয়ে,
তারাই আসছে ফিরে এখন বিয়ের প্রস্তাব নিয়ে।
সেই গৃহকর্ত্রীও আসলেন ভ্রাতৃবধু করার তরে,
মেয়েটি তখন তাড়িয়ে দেয় তারে অপমান করে।
যেই আসে বিয়ের প্রস্তাব নিয়ে প্রবল আগ্রহে,
শর্ত এক জুড়ে দেয় সবারে সে প্রচণ্ড দ্রোহে;
যদি থাকে কেউ রাজী বসবে সে বিয়ের পিঁড়িতে,
চাকরীটা ছেড়ে দিয়ে শুধু স্বামী-সংসার সেবিতে।
অমনি পালায় সবাই বিয়ের নামে দিয়ে ইতি,
বলে, ‘কে ঠেকছে কালো মেয়ের করতে গতি’!

Marriageable Girl
A marriageable home-tutor teaches a young girl,
While teaching, once the night approached;
She asked the landlady, “Is there anyone at home,
Who could escort me to pass the alleyway?”
Because, a couple of scoundrels hang out there,
So, she is a little afraid to cross the throughfare.
The landlady laughed out loud, hearing that.
She couldn’t find the reason of her mirth!
“But I thought they are scared of you, she said,
Have you seen what colour shines on your hide?”
She felt insulted for her dark skin, so came out in agitation,
Weeping back on the way home in pain and emotion.
Once the mother asked the daughter’s father,
The black boy who will come to see her,
How will you let her hold on his hands!
He got angry and shouted, “Yes, it can be happened.
Disable, lame, ugly or stupid — whoever agrees,
I will admit the relationship to accomplish.
Who will marry your black daughter,
Did you swallow coal while conceived her?”
On one hand, the girl can’t protest her daddy,
On the other hand, mum weeps with worry,
‘Will no chap come in her real life,
What should we do if all our efforts futile?’
Proposals come and proposals go back,
So, the father’s temper gone to the peak.
Then once he said to the girl in rage:
Is there no poison in the market for you these days?
In wrath and disgrace, a strong promise she made,
She will not marry until her life is shaped.
When she became a government officer through diligence,
The proposals of marriage began to come countless.
Those who went once showing their back,
They are coming now with positive approach back.
The landlady also came to make her brother’s partner,
The girl then chased her away by insulting her.
Who comes with great interest of marriage proposal,
A condition she introduces to everyone in the betrayal;
If there is someone willing to marry her,
She will leave the job to serve the family and partner.
Everyone turns away with the termination of the marriage,
Saying, “the black girl — who is going to salvage”!
